At the ANME Summer 2018 trade show, I saw USGladius Knives. With their unique design and undeniable quality, I had to buy one. USGladius knives are based off the short, Gladius swords that were used by the Roman Legions for over 400 years. This design makes their knives stand out in a world of tactical knife makers that are always trying to get the “edge” on the competition.

I purchased the Thraex XII Tactical knife at the show. This is their original blade design. The knife is constructed of a full tang, titanium-coated stainless-steel blade that is double sided and serrated on one edge. The grip is interchangeable, using two Allen screws, and made of a lightweight and heavy duty Micarta composite. Even without a grip, the knife is shaped to fit very comfortably in the hand. The overall knife measures 12 inches, and the blade itself is 6.5 inches. The tip of the blade is probably one of the most perfect and sharpest points that I have ever seen on a blade. However, as with many knives on the market, I felt that the blade would need an initial sharpening. The overall knife is weighted very well and almost feels like a large throwing knife, even though it is a heavy knife, weighing 11 ounces. The grip can be removed to lessen the weight slightly.

Included with the Thraex XII is a hard plastic, tactical sheath. Two small, nylon straps hold the knife in place with metal snaps. Similarly, on the back across the top are two slightly longer nylon straps with snaps for easily attaching and removing the sheath from a belt. Around the edge of the sheath are small metal holes for attaching the sheath to gear or a person, using paracord and slots for attaching it to any MOLLE webbing.

Personally, I was shocked by the affordability of these unique and quality blades. Currently, the Thraex XII retails at only $60. A comparable knife of this size and quality typically sells for well over $150 in some stores.
