Letter from the Editor – June 2014: Support Our Veterans!
Welcome to the June edition of Surplus Today!
Dear Readers,
I am diverting from my communication theme for this issue because of the events that recently happened at Fort Hood, Texas.
Fort Hood: Two incidences of violence within a short time frame. It seems almost everything we read, hear, or watch, especially on the news, is some sort of tragedy. The big difference is that I AM GOING TO FOCUS ON POSITIVE ACTION and not heap more distress on an already bad news-overloaded audience.
So what can our 3,000+ readers do to make a difference? I challenge you all to do ONE THING to help a returning vet. It need not be a long term commitment, but if you do have the time, you might consider making this your way of building a better world. For a complete list of organizations you can contact please see the advertisement below.
Here are some suggestions that take just a few minutes:
- Buy a service woman or man a cup of coffee or his/her lunch.
- Thank vets and those still in uniform for their service and sacrifices.
- See our list to find where you can write a soldier a letter from home.
- Make up a care package and send it.
- Email your Congressional Representative or Senator and ask for pro vet legislation.
- Allocate funds for more debriefing counseling by experienced counselors who do not have to conform to military ways of therapy.
- Contact a VFW or American Legion post and just visit to brighten up someone’s day or attend their events and fundraisers.
- Contact a local university. Many of them have veterans groups. There may be someone who really needs you to JUST LISTEN.
Check out this website: www.acp-advisornet.org. ACP (American Corporate Partners). This is a network of businesses, other professionals and veterans who provide online Q&A career guidance to returning service women and men. Here are some more ideas:
- Hire a veteran.
- Start a mentoring group of other business owners or suggest some pro-vet programs to already existing organizations like Kiwanis or Rotary Clubs.
So please take a few minutes RIGHT NOW, before anything on your daily “to do list” intrudes. If each of our 3,000+ readers did just one thing, think of the difference we could make! Please let us know what you did and we can create a second wave of ideas and good feelings you can share with others.
