Navigating Today’s Retail Challenges
Brett Bryan, Radians’ new Director of Sporting Goods, believes two of the top challenges facing the Sporting Goods industry are:
1.) Less participation in hunting and shooting sports due to changing age demographics, cultural shifts, technology, access, and more.
2.) Economic pressures such as inflation are squeezing disposable income for many Americans, shifting spending priorities toward essentials like groceries and housing and away from discretionary pursuits like hunting and shooting.
“As an independent retailer, the best way to keep customers coming back is by building relationships,” said Bryan. “Be the person your customers trust, the one they come to with questions, and the expert they rely upon.”
His advice for independent retailers facing challenges is two-fold: stay focused on your core customers, while also finding entertaining ways to bring in new ones, including women and youth.
Give Your Customers and Prospects an Experience They Can’t Get Online
One way to create an experience and grow your customer base is by hosting face-to-face events at your store. Here customers can test and try-on products and receive guidance from your sales team and the local shooting and hunting instructors/ guides who you invite to the event.
You can also host events that are centered around women and youth, two of the most important growth audiences for the sporting goods industry because they shape future participation, purchasing behavior, and brand loyalty.
When thinking about today’s youth, pay close attention to Gen Alpha whose oldest members will turn 16 in 2026. According to the Marketing Dive, this cohort born between 2010 and 2024 “already wields $28 billion in direct spending power,” whether through their own purchases or the influence they have over parental purchases.
At your event, offer snacks, giveaways, exclusive event discounts, and a raffle for a popular item in your store. Face-to-face events create fun experiences for customers and prospects, and they also establish you as the local expert.
In addition to hosting fun and low-pressure events, retailers can expand their influence by:
-Sponsoring local shooting competitions and tournaments.
-Attending local hunting, fishing, archery, and hiking club meetings. If you can’t attend, consider donating an item that can be used for prizes at the meeting. This is a great way to promote your store’s name among those who need to know about your store.
-Partnering with local causes that support conservation groups, schools, youth outdoor education programs, and women’s self defense classes.
